From preimplantation genetic testing to mosaic embryos, the world of fertility genetics can be confusing. The technology we use every day is constantly and rapidly evolving, and it is your right as a patient to be fully informed about any and all fertility treatments and tests you receive. This is part of the reason why I am so excited to share a podcast on which I was recently featured- The Fertility Health Podcast with Dr. Mark Trolice.
What You’ll Learn
In this episode, we talk about preimplantation genetic testing- from its evolution in the 1990s to its current uses and value. Originally, this type of testing was used to screen for diseases like cystic fibrosis, because testing can prevent the transfer of embryos that carry disease. We discuss the debate surrounding this testing method, so I encourage you to give the podcast a listen!
We also spend some time talking about mosaic embryos- what they are and why they are dividing IVF experts. Mosaicism is when we find a mix of normal and abnormal chromosomes in tested cells, but as this is a fairly new test, there is much debate among fertility specialists about where we should be going next. Finally, we talk about the ideal patient population for PGT and chromosome testing- but I won’t give it away!
